The Wellness-Recovery Connection

The Wellness-Recovery Connection
By:John F. Newport, Ph.D
Published on 2004-12-01 by HCI

A leading wellness advocate offers a step-by-step holistic plan for the 50 million people in recovery – a personalized blueprint for adding years to their life and life to their years.

Includes a foreword by leading relapse prevention expert Terence T.

Gorski.

Based on over thirty years in the trenches as a wellness professional and counselor, John Newport, Ph.D.

shares the missing dimension in recovery and the reason why the majority of people battling alcoholism and drug addiction fail to reap the full benefits of recovery and optimal health: They don’t adopt a wellness-oriented lifestyle.

Newport breaks down the nebulous concept of wellness into 7 steps, and gives people in recovery – and their families – specific tools to design their own blueprint for optimal health, including: Nutrition: nutritional hazards associated with alcoholism and drug addiction, and how to lay a sound nutritional foundation for recovery.

Exercise: role of exercise in preventing relapse and enjoying optimal health, with tips on how to get started.

Stress Management: practical tips on stress management and meditation, specifically geared to people in recovery.

Spiritual Needs: tips on how to manifest your unique sense of central purpose, and how this will help you stay clean and sober and move toward optimal health.

Social Supports: how to develop a strong social support system, sexuality in recovery, and more.

Conquering Substitute Addictions: including nicotine addiction, caffeine addiction and junk food binging.

Health Care: why our health care system is "wired backwards", and how recovering people can effectively work with doctors and other health care resources.

A must read for people in recovery, and treatment professionals.

Children and Addiction

Children and Addiction
By:Gennaro Ottomanelli
Published on 1995 by Greenwood

Despite the fear surrounding the issue of drug use by our children, there is little information to guide those interested in providing help to children vulnerable to substance abuse.

Children and Addiction addresses the needs of counselors, teachers, parents, and other concerned parties by describing the influence of habit formation, opportunity, access, predisposition, family relationships, the educational environment, and interpersonal communication as precursors to the addictive process.

The effects of addiction and its impact upon the individual, family, school, and society are discussed in detail.

Additional information is provided on types of drugs, treatment, relapse, self-help groups, and the recovery process.

Interspersed throughout the text are descriptive case histories to assist the reader in their understanding of the process of addiction.

A Family Guide to Mental Health Recovery

A Family Guide to Mental Health Recovery
By:Stephanie McMahon
Published on 2020-05-11 by Independently Published

Endorsement from Benedict Carey, science reporter, The New York Times: "Across my career covering mental health, I have fielded scores of urgent calls from readers: 'My brother's suicidal;' or, 'my daughter is on the street, psychotic' -what do I do? There was never one good answer.

But now there is: a warmly written, deeply informed guide for families in crisis, by true experts with a lifetime of experience." About the book A Family Guide to Mental Health Recovery is for parents of adult children who struggle with a serious mental illness.

Serious mental illness is complex, the mental health treatment system in the U.S.

is fragmented, and you may often feel like your child's future has been overlooked.

We want you to know there is hope for recovery.

This guide is intended to help families get their bearings, understand the mental health system and its limitations, and build a path forward towards person-centered recovery.

Additional Endorsements "This is a 'break the glass' kind of document to help you know how to respond to an emergency." "When you have just gotten the diagnosis, you think, "What the heck should we do?" This guide would have given us a new way of thinking about what was going on and what to do next.

And it would have helped us in a crisis to know about all of the options." "I like how you have helped us to see that there is no single path to recovery.

It would be good to repeat that there is no tried and true method for everyone.

Each person is different." "Your treatment planning section shows that having a diagnosis does not mean that my family member should forget about her dreams of having a good life.

The overall theme is that there is hope; there are things that are useful to try."

Dopesick

Dopesick
By:Beth Macy
Published on 2018-08-07 by Little, Brown

Journalist Beth Macy's definitive account of America's opioid epidemic "masterfully interlaces stories of communities in crisis with dark histories of corporate greed and regulatory indifference" (New York Times) -- from the boardroom to the courtroom and into the living rooms of Americans.

In this extraordinary work, Beth Macy takes us into the epicenter of a national drama that has unfolded over two decades.

From the labs and marketing departments of big pharma to local doctor's offices; wealthy suburbs to distressed small communities in Central Appalachia; from distant cities to once-idyllic farm towns; the spread of opioid addiction follows a tortuous trajectory that illustrates how this crisis has persisted for so long and become so firmly entrenched.

Beginning with a single dealer who lands in a small Virginia town and sets about turning high school football stars into heroin overdose statistics, Macy sets out to answer a grieving mother's question-why her only son died-and comes away with a gripping, unputdownable story of greed and need.

From the introduction of OxyContin in 1996, Macy investigates the powerful forces that led America's doctors and patients to embrace a medical culture where overtreatment with painkillers became the norm.

In some of the same communities featured in her bestselling book Factory Man, the unemployed use painkillers both to numb the pain of joblessness and pay their bills, while privileged teens trade pills in cul-de-sacs, and even high school standouts fall prey to prostitution, jail, and death.

Through unsparing, compelling, and unforgettably humane portraits of families and first responders determined to ameliorate this epidemic, each facet of the crisis comes into focus.

In these politically fragmented times, Beth Macy shows that one thing uniting Americans across geographic, partisan, and class lines is opioid drug abuse.

But even in the midst of twin crises in drug abuse and healthcare, Macy finds reason to hope and ample signs of the spirit and tenacity that are helping the countless ordinary people ensnared by addiction build a better future for themselves, their families, and their communities.

"An impressive feat of journalism, monumental in scope and urgent in its implications." -- Jennifer Latson, The Boston Globe

Addiction. New Treatments and Strategies

Addiction. New Treatments and Strategies
By:Mutinda Jackson
Published on 2018-06-28 by GRIN Verlag

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Medicine - Therapy, grade: 1.0, Mount Kenya University, language: English, abstract: Drug arrests are common in most parts of the world with at least a quarter of the population locked up in America have committed and been arrested because of drugs.

Despite the efforts by most governments to fight drugs the use rates remain steady over years.

Many countries continue to spend huge amounts of money on war on drugs for security reasons and for a healthy population.

Drug prohibition in many countries has left some drugs legal and others illegal such as marijuana and opium.

Drug treatment is quite costly and demanding as those receiving treatment are required to remain in treatment for some time for treatment effectiveness.

The process may involve multiple courses of treatment to attain success.

In 2009, approximately 23.5 million persons in United States aged 12 and above needed some form of treatment for drug or alcohol abuse problems.

Unfortunately, only 2.6 million roughly 11.2 percent of this population received treatment at a specialty facility.

Alcohol abuse records highest admissions to substance abuse treatment facilities followed by heroin and other opiates followed by marijuana.
